Avelox (moxifloxacin) is a synthetic fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat a range of conditions, most frequently:

• Bacterial Sinusitis
• Bacterial Exacerbation of Chronic Bronchitis
• Community Acquired Pneumonia
• Uncomplicated Skin and Skin Structure Infections
• Complicated Skin and Skin Structure Infections
• Complicated Intra-Abdominal Infections

It is almost always used to treat acute (short term) bacterial infections. It is not effective against viral infections or certain types of bacteria, though symptoms can be very similar; do not buy Avelox to treat an undiagnosed infection.

Avelox is a potent antibiotic and may be successful in treating infection caused by bacteria that are resistant to other medications, particularly in lung infections. In some areas, namely the EU, by law prescriptions to buy Avelox may only be given after treatment with other antibiotics have failed, in an attempt to limit its use and thereby retain its effectiveness against otherwise-resistant bacteria.

Eradicating Infections with Avelox

The medication comes in tablets containing 400 mg of moxifloxacin. It is not possible to buy Avelox in other doses; likewise it is not possible to buy Avelox in other forms of administration, with the sole exception of IV fluid for use in hospital settings.

There is a reason the medication is only available in 400 mg; the dose is the same for all conditions:

• Take 400 mg Avelox once per day to treat infection.
• Taking with food is optional.
• Take with a full glass of fluid and drink plenty of additional fluids throughout treatment.
• Take tablets 4 hours before or 8 hours after consuming products which contain iron, zinc, magnesium, or aluminum, including antacids and multivitamins.

There is, however, significant variance in duration of treatment:

• Bacterial Sinusitis - 10 days
• Bacterial Exacerbation of Chronic Bronchitis - 5 days
• Community Acquired Pneumonia - 7 to 14 days
• Uncomplicated Skin and Skin Structure Infections - 7 days
• Complicated Skin and Skin Structure Infections - 7 to 21 days
• Complicated Intra-Abdominal Infections - 5 to 14 days

As with all antibiotics, the medication should be taken for the full length of the prescribed treatment even if symptoms disappear entirely. This prevents a resurgence of the infection as well as reduces the development of resistant bacteria.

Taking the medication at the same time each day will maximize effects; taking doses too far apart will result in lowered levels of the medication in the body.

Precautions & Side Effects

Patients should be aware that there is a slight risk this product can cause tendon damage; the risk is greater in patients over 60, patients who are taking corticosteroids, patients who have a history of tendon or joint problems, and patients who have had an organ transplant. Be alert for symptoms of tingling, numbness, pain, swelling, or other unusual sensations, even if mild, in tendons, joints or muscles, and seek medical attention such symptoms do occur.

Patients with certain preexisting conditions should use the medication with caution:

• Heart rhythm disorders
• Muscle or nerve disorders
• Liver or kidney disease
• History of seizures or epilepsy
• History of head injury or brain tumor
• Chronic low levels of potassium (hypokalemia)
• Use of blood thinners

The above conditions do not rule out use of Avelox, but patients should be extra-alert for symptoms of complications.

Side effects are typically mild and similar to those encountered with any antibiotic use:

• Headache
• Nausea
• Diarrhea
• Dizziness

The above side effects are not cause for concern unless severe.
